The Gintong Lahi Awards
History of PHILTOBO
PHILTOBO started giving out the "Gintong Lahi" Awards in 1999 or barely a year following the formation of the prestigious owner and breeders organization originally headed by the late Speaker Ramon "Monching" j'yIitra as Chairman and banker-horseman Augusto "Tito" de Jesus as President. The recipieht of the first-ever "Gintong Lahi" Horse of the Year award was champion galloper Real Top, who won all the major stakes races in 1998, including a sweep of the elusive Triple Crown and the prestigious Presidential Gold Cup. Real Top's connections also won majority of the other categories during the inaugural "Gin tong Lahi" awards, including the award for jockey, trainer and breeder of the year. The dominant Rojas racing stable also took home the award for champion two-year-old colts and two-yearold fillies with Explosive and Confetti bagging the award, respectively .. The second "Gin tong Lahi" awards night was, in turn, dominated by the connections of 1999 Presidential Gold Cup winner Hobby, the big finishing race filly owned by Jose Vergel de Dios who went on to bag the title as champion three-year-old filly and Horse of the Year. Hobby's regular rider - Ramon Guce and trainer - Juanito Macaraig, also ran away with the premiership title in their respective division. Incidentally, Hobby stablemate, New Zealandbred import Three In One took home' the title as champion imported galloper, becoming the first recipient of such an award. The third edition of the "Gin tong Lahi" Awards saw the crowning of the first-ever two-year-old galloper as Horse of the Year. Patrick Dy's Silver Story, who went on to sweep all the major juvenile races in 2000 edged out 2000 Presidential Gold Cup winner Wind Blown to bag the coveted title. Connections of Silver Story expectedly bagged majority of the awards, including the championship title for jockey, trainer and owner and breeder, as well as, the first -ever sovereign award for broodmare of the year going to her dam, Northern Edge. The fourth "Gintong Lahi" Awards provided the perfect opportunity for the industry to honor Wind Blown and his connections, as he completed a near flawless performance in 2001, that included a classic double in the Pirst Gent's Silver Cup and the Presidential Gold Cup. Wind Blown finally took home the coveted Horse of the Year title, as well as, the award as champion older horse. His connections also shared in the honor, with both his trainer and breeder taking home the division title together with Wind Blown's dam, Wind in my Hair, which received the broodmare of the year title. The fifth staging of the "Gintong Lahi" Awards was no less eventful, with dominant galloper Wind Blown emerging anew as the year's best and was adjudged as Horse of the Year for the second straight year. Much like the previous year, Wind Blown also took home the Champion Older Horse title. Wind Blown's dominating performance in 2002 also resulted to premiership titles for his connections. Owner Hermie Esguerra emerged as Owner of the Year. Ricardo 'jun" Paman, the erstwhile trainer of Wind Blown through much of the champ's 2002 campaign, was given the Trainer of the Year award, while, regular rider Pernando Raquel, Jr. received the award as Jockey of the Year. Wind Blown's sire, Hazm, which passed away in 2002, was chosen as Stallion of the Year, while his mare, Wind in my Hair, was named Broodmare of the Year. The champ's breeder and former owner, Sandy Javier took home the Breeder of the Year title for the second straight year. Last year's sixth staging of the "Gintong Lahi" Awards proved to be the perfect setting for Wind Blown's entry into the hall of fame as he was awarded the Horse of the Year title for a record third straight year. Sharing in the valedictory of one of local racing's most dominant campaigner were owner Hermie Esguerra, trainer Nestor Manalang and jockey Patty Dilema, who were all awarded the championship title in their respective fields. Rising track stars Cover Girl and Empire King emerged as runaway winners in the Juvenile divisions, with War Hero taking home the 3YO filly title. In the hotly contested 3YO colt derby, involving five outstanding chargers, accumulated points in stakes became the basis for the choice with Success Story eventually winning the crown. Breakout import Midnight Lady was adjudged as the best in her division, while the superbly-bred Conquistarose and the blue-hen mare Carta Nueve were named as champion progenitors of 2003. Sandy Javier, much like Wind Blown, similarly achieved the unprecedented grand slam by becoming top breeder of the year for the third straight year.
